The Diary Of Lincoln My New Pit Bull Puppy, Day 1
I will be chronicling the daily progress of my new Pit Bull puppy Lincoln giving you guys an inside look at exactly how I raise him, the approach I take and the methods I use for crating and crate training a dog to be house broken in Lincoln’s Daily Diary. I hope it will help other Pit Bull owners with some training advice or tips, or serve as a basic guide for any dog owner on effective ways on how to raise a Pit Bull dog.

Dad called me at work and said he needed ‘help with something’ and he needs help with everything so it wasn’t a big deal. But when I walked in the door he was standing in the room and yelled ‘Merry Christmas!‘…
I looked down to see this gorgeous little brown Pit Bull puppy with white stripes down his nose and on top of his head wearing a blue sweater and wagging his tail!

I was so shocked that I gasped and scared my new Pit Bull pup a bit…Maybe he thought it was a bad gasp but he was sure shy at first! I had owned Pit Bulls before but times are tough and my first thought was that I prayed I would be able to give him the life and attention he deserves when raising a dog but I had so many reasons to want another Pit Bull.
He was so cute but seemed a bit overwhelmed and wanted to just lay in the corner with a toy. I walked over and played with him some and got him used to me, my voice, my smell and then I picked him up took him a couple blocks over to my apartment, his new home.
Usually dogs and especially new puppies go through an adjustment period, and it may take a couple of days for them to settle down and really open up. Understandable right? New people, new places, new smells and sounds…It can have a bit of a shock effect on the little thing. So I took it easy, gave him a bed to lie in with some toys and let him a bit of space and gave him some treats.
This is a time for you to create a bond with your dog that will last a lifetime, stronger than any bond the dog will ever make. I wanted to be kind, easygoing and gentle with the little guy. I want him to feel safe, secure and comfortable in this new and strange place around these new and strange people.
So it wasn’t long before my new Pit Bull puppy Lincoln, (unnamed at the time) fell asleep on the floor since we got home. I plan to eat in tonight and we will watch some tv and cuddle until bedtime. We went outside a couple times and I make sure to praise him tons “yayyy good boy!” every time he pees or poops outside and give him a treat along with it. It will reinforce proper house training a dog so you should definitely do it as well.
Now for bed, crating a puppy or ‘crate training’ is IMPERATIVE the first week (or more) and you have to be tough enough to withstand the moaning and crying…It will pass and it will pay off. You need to make sure very early on that the Pit Bull puppy can develop the will to hold their bladder which is imperative to training a dog to be house broken. The first night or two you will be woken up by crying and will have to take the dog out. But sooner than later he will make it through the night without crying. This is when you can potentially bring the pup into bed with you like I plan to, knowing full well he will not pee in the middle of the night. But I am sure I will have to take him outside as soon as we wake!
Day 1 with my new Pit Bull puppy Lincoln was an amazing surprise, what a Christmas present he is! We will work on potty training and making sure he is house broken. I will also be crating the dog because crate training is imperative the first few nights at least and will help you in the future!
Stay tuned! I will be posting our Day 2 story tomorrow and will continue to offer exact methods to training and raising a responsible, well-behaved Pit Bull dog.
