Who do you think is more aggressive towards the other? Do Pit Bulls display more aggression towards people? Or do people show more aggression towards Pit Bulls?
Sure Pit Bulls can be aggressive towards other dogs, heck sometimes they are aggressive towards people…But can you tell me that you don’t know just one person that is so terrified of Pit Bulls that they would wish them off this earth if it were possible?
Fear makes people far more aggressive than Pit Bulls.
…our lack of knowledge creates a void filled with heavy problems and hollow solutions…
See just like our Pit Bulls aren’t perfect, neither are we. As people, humans tend to let their fear control their decisions when it comes to the Bully Breed and then people become aggressive. That’s why we have states like Ohio that are the Pit Bull equivalent to an isolated North Korea. Or states with towns like Ionia across America rushing to lock the gates on this great American breed without ever stopping to really think of the benefits and reasons to own a Pit Bull like Jim Sak the paralyzed owner of a Pit Bull service dog that was banned in Iowa. Even the “professionals” in training rooms and “experts” of animal control facilities are guilty of sewing this straw-man.
What ever happened to personal responsibility? I don’t remember the last time I read a story about a foul acting American Pit Bull Terrier in which the irresponsible owner was the center of the aggression discussion. It seems the only people who approach these incidents with a level head are the Pit Bulls themselves.
See aggression in a Pit Bull is explainable, it is reasonable and usually predictable. Pit Bulls do not go around biting or attacking people or dogs for no reason, animals don’t do things “just because”. But just because that is true doesn’t mean us people are level headed enough to consider it. If we just stopped and realized this, we could restrict the ownership to non-moronic and responsible people and BAM! case closed and Pit Bull aggression issues get the needle.
The aggression comes in a couple forms. Most Pit Bulls don’t exhibit people aggression and many of them don’t show any Pit Bull dog aggression either when trained and socialized responsibly. In my years I have never met a Pit Bull that was aggressive towards people but I did meet many that were not great with other dogs. It is difficult or impossible to suppress their predispositions with a long history of dog fighting but nobody is asking any human to stop their natural inclinations either. We work with our dogs and do the best we can, some of them just aren’t meant to spend their lives playing with other pups and that is fine, it is controllable. But I must be clear, Pit Bulls and people aggression are the exception, not the rule.
What is not controllable are misinformed people with a legislative pen and a fear of Pit Bulls.
Because of this fear they believe aggression in Pit Bulls is extraordinary and so many of them across this country are doing their best to rid us of this “evil breed” of dog. Either none of these people know what a Pit Bull is like or then they are doing it for far more nefarious reasons like votes. We need to educate the masses as best we can and continue to build our Pit Bull alliance. I envision a day where Pit Bulls are hailed as America’s dog of choice and breed specific legislation is just a thing of the past.
