CUMBERLAND COUNTY NC DROPS BREED BAN!
WE DID IT!
Talk about powerful! Cumberland County NC dog ban of Bully Breed and other pups has been dropped thanks to your support of last Friday’s “PitBull and Bully Breed Dog Ban And Kill Plan, Fayetteville, NC” was successful in garnering support crucial to convincing theĀ Animal Control Board to drop their Bully Breed ban proposal !!!! On Monday night the Cumberland County NC breed ban was dropped amidst a swell of passionate Bully Breed supporters who stood firmly against the misplaced focus on breed based policy and against the myths of the Pit Bull breed.
“By Monday night, Lauby said he had received more than 18,000 emails…”
The NC Bully Breed adoption ban brought more than 100 people to the building who packed the room and the halls. Among it’s supporters were PitBull owners, breeders, groomers and trainers who stood in testament to loving nature of the breed. The Fayetteville Animal Control Board was taught a lesson about the true loving nature of the American Pit Bull Terrier and made aware of the “inappropriate and ineffective” nature of the NC Bully Breed ban strategy. A group of people had been assigned to study the possible effect of the NC dog ban and they essentially concluded that it was the wrong way to go. Instead of focusing on the adoption dog ban, Cumberland County is turning its sights onto vetting the people and potential owners looking to adopt the breed, and rightfully so. Amen!
The Board had no choice but to leave the NC breed ban dropped, and move on to establishing a better criteria for prospective owners;
After the dog breed ban was dropped, a few suggested that spaying and neutering laws should be mandatory on adopted Bully Breeds which is common sense thinking! Our shelters are already packed with Pit Bull pups! Instead of the Fayetteville Bully Breed ban, there were calls for tighter regulations and punishment of the ‘backyard breeders’ who make a quick buck looking to sell unregistered Pit Bull and Bully Breed pups. You all should take great pride in knowing you have successfully turned the Cumberland County Animal Control Board’s attention away from Breed Specific Legislation and onto the right problems, bad owners and backyard breeders.
If we can have the NC breed ban dropped then we can do it in other towns across the country as well!
As of this moment Dr. John Lauby, the animal control director in Cumberland County, said he wasn’t sure precisely in what form the adoption owner checks would take place but there are plenty of similar disposed NC breed ban cases to frame their approach after. “The wheel’s already been invented,”….”We need to be in contact with them, see what they’ve done.” Bravo. If only the Board could’ve had some sense from the start they would’ve realize the Bully Breed ban was ineffective and misguided in the first place, but a win is a win. The new legislation will go before a committee of county commissioners in early 2012 and volunteers have already spoken out about their willingness to help with costs.
“This is going to be a good thing,” Lauby said. “Now more people are aware of our problem.”
What happened in the Fayetteville Bully Breed ban case should be a glaring reminder to all PitBull advocates that we do have a powerful voice and can make positive change. We should let no dog breed ban get passed without a fight and I am sure we can make the same positive effect as we had here in Cumberland County NC. Thank you so much for your support, there are many Bully Breed pups that will find great homes in Fayetteville thanks to your support against the NC dog ban.

I had no idea this was happening. I’m out of the country at the moment and have been off and on for several years. I am so grateful too everybody who supported this movement and had this BSL plan DROPPED! Please contact me and let me know if there is anything I can do in the future. As I’ve noticed the county might try and back door the proposal in 2012. Thanks again everybody.

It is really a shame that so many people are okay with discriminating against our pets. One of the main reasons this website was created was to combat and cure that problem! Thank you for coming Quinn, we look forward to having you back!
