My girl.

What To Expect When Adopting A BULLY BREED

an interactive PitBull page!

When I got my first American PitBull Terrier pup I was anxious and excited and I didn’t know what to expect…When I got my second PitBull bullies I was anxious, excited and overwhelmed and I didn’t know what to expect…When Pitbull‘s number 3 and 4 came along I was thankfully already numb! But whoever said you couldn’t buy happiness forgot to consider puppies. I am filled with this feeling like I madk a difference.

PitBulls bring people together, the dog is special beyond usual limits. To adopt a PitBull or Bully Breed is to save a life and probably more because every responsible owner is creating positive PitBulls habits and raises a Bully who is an ambassador for the breed…When we beat ignorance with information we bring people together and who knows how many PitBulls you save throughout the course of your dogs life by showing others how great the Bully Breed really is?

I want this to be an interactive PitBull page so I want YOU to comment with your ideas on what to expect when owning or adopting a PitBull and I will add them to this page!

Anyway, driving home from the shelter with my new buddy I was ecstatic but at the same time humbled by the task ahead. I was essentially a dad, responsible for the well-being and sustenance of another living being. Love at first sight, that’s what to expect when adopting a PitBull in my experience.

I plan to make this list concise and easy reading. Keeping it short and sweet here and please respond with your own ideas and opinions, I know I can’t cover it all!

What to expect when adopting a PitBull:

  • They learn FAST! For better or for worse these Bully Breed pups pick everything up quickly so make sure you are setting good examples and creating positive PitBull habits!

I had read up on PitBull ownership and training a Bully Breed so I knew I had to begin right away. The first thing I did was house-train him of course because I didn’t want to expect a mess on a daily basis….and I’m sure it would be the first thing you think of too! After adopting Dominoe we spent the day playing around outside and when he peed or did his business I would praise him loud and clear, give him a treat and name the action. Tell ya what, that dog never went to the bathroom indoors one time EVER in his life. So I can tell you with certainty that when adopting, you can expect a PitBull to learn fast with proper training.

  • They are gorgeous creatures! My second PitBull was Dakota, she is dark-brown, nearly black and very sleek, very slender and well-toned. If PitBulls were supermodels she would be Naomi Campbell, minus the attitude problem. ;o)

She is a gorgeous looking dog who is mature and serious-minded but at heart she is a big goofball…She loves to rub herself in the grass and throw around her toys with her mouth while pouncing around the house like a jack-rabbit. She

  • They have large personalities! It is no secret that a PitBull can work an entire room and steal the spotlight.

PitBulls are social butterflies and they love attention. So another thing you can expect when adopting a PitBull is a dynamic personality and are quite comical characters….So much so I sometimes wonder if these pups don’t know exactly what their doing to get a laugh. They are very smart and react interestingly to any situation, they can really be a marvel to observe on a daily basis.

  • They can be stubborn! You shouldn’t expect everything to always go perfectly.

Whether its pee’ing on a friends carpet, barking excessively at another dog in public, pulling on the leash during a walk or refusing to get off your bed our PitBull pups can be quite the tough cookies. They know what they want and they want it, end of story. Being of strong character and determination is essential as the owner of an American PitBull Terrier. You must work to master your dogs behavior but the good news is that they are very pliable beings and can be shaped and molded into the perfectly polite pup you want!

  • People. You can’t own a PitBull and not be an advocate! We never really notice how strangers act towards us, but when your a PitBull owner it becomes a glaring sight!

It is no secret that the PitBull breed has a bad rap and while they don’t deserve it, it is what it is…At least til we can change it! But you must be prepared to deal with people who are ignorant to your dog. As sweet, kind and friendly as your dog is, you will come across people who are just as nasty because they believe things that aren’t true. BUT you will also meet many more people who know your Bully Breed is misunderstood and those people will literally seek you out in a crowd and come to say hello. PitBulls bring people together.

You will have to be ready to set the record straight on occasion if your approached or hassled by anyone and it will happen. These are good things because they give you an opportunity to change a mind…Don’t meet ignorance with rudeness, instead meet ignorance with information. That is the true anti-PitBull disinfectant.

  • Fun and Sweat! PitBulls are active dogs and will help you get in shape!

Bully Breed dogs need a lot of exercise every single day and you will be the benefactor of it! They love to play games like fetch and if you don’t have a backyard you can find a local fenced-in baseball field that would work great! They really are a ton of fun and things never get dull with this breed. It’s proven that owning a PitBull is good for your health and I think that is an awesome reason to own a PitBull!

  • Work!

They are awesome dogs with high intelligence but you need to be committed to raising your Bully Breed through dog training and self-training. You cannot train your dog until you first train yourself. Everything you do will be dissected and disseminated by the dog and lazy or lousy habits will only make training your Bully Breed harder. To create positive PitBull habits you need to live them every day and never give up. The training is never finished but the results are always rewarding. Just make sure you do your due-diligence and remember to be a responsible PitBull owner.

These are just a few of the many things to expect when adopting a PitBull so I hope you comment and leave your own ideas! I will edit this post and publish any of your great ideas on things to expect when you own a Bully Breed.

i worked at an animal rescue when i met my 1st pitbull/staffordshire bull terrier. she was the sweetest dog i ever met. when you got down on your knees she would jump up. put her paws on your shoulders and hug you as long as you let her. i know they can be the sweetest dogs. but i know they have the potential to do damage. my last dog got attacked twice by pitbulls. one locked onto her head and would not let go for prob 2 min. unfortunatly my pups passed away last month(not from that attack). i found a dog at the shelter that looks like a staffordshire bull terrier american staffie mix. my concern is where i live is people get them and train them to be aggressive and not knowing this dogs background im nervous about bringing him home. i doubt he would hurt a person, he seems like a real nice but hyper dog but im concerned for my cats. anyway i adopted him today but i cant bring him home till tues after he gets neutered. my question is how should i introduce them? this guy has got a huge head bigger than most pits, and it would only take one mistake and my cat could be really hurt. i probably didnt pick a good breed to bring home when i have 2 cats but he seemed so nice and i felt if i could save his life and give him a home, i just couldnt leave him there.. anyway wish me luck

Rick I’m sorry to hear about your pup passing as well as the experience with the untrained/irresponsibly owned Pit Bulls. You are correct they are great dogs, but like any animal they have the ability to create problems when lacking proper care. As for this new pup, I would try to introduce him to the cats while he is in a crate or a carrier, preferably. There are no guarantees but it depends on his prey drive and prior socialization whether or not it would make a good fit. If the first part of the meeting goes well you can try bringing the dog out of the crate/carrier while on leash, and if he goes right after the cat(s) then you could still have an issue. What you want to see is a dog that is interested but not obsessed, you want to be able to keep its attention despite the cats being around. The animals should never be alone without supervision I am sure you know that but it’s a disclaimer worth mentioning.
Thanks for your help at the shelter and thank you for visiting us here. Please let us know how it goes we wish you the very best of luck.
